Office affairs can be tricky – but dating your boss is an even trickier proposition. Anyone involved in an office romance fears what will happen if the affair turns sour, but these fears are even greater if it's your boss.

Falling for your boss is a minefield because he or she has a power over you that a co-worker you may be having an affair with simply does not. Plus you could get accused of receiving special treatment if word of the affair gets out.

Juan, a 27-year-old junior marketing executive, fell for his boss and advises others in the same position to think twice. "I was smitten with her. She was so clever and gorgeous and everything I had ever wanted in a woman – or so I thought. We went on a few dates and it went well at first then the spark went out of it. It started to get real awkward in the office when I realized she liked me more than I liked her. I started dating a lovely woman I met through one of the dating websites but kept it a secret, although I did confide in one co-worker, who let it slip one evening after a few drinks while we were all out at a company dinner.

"The very next day my boss started picking fault with my work – and it just got worse and worse until I finally decided to leave. Luckily, I found another – and better – job at a rival company. So in a way, it worked out well for me. But if I was in the same position again, I wouldn’t do it."

Maryanne, a 23-year-old who worked for a large telecommunications company, has a very different story…"The moment I laid eyes on my boss, I knew he was the one for me. I know sounds corny, but it was love at first sight. I was crazy about him. It took six months before anything happened between us. It was the office Christmas party. We got together on a drunken night, but the next day, he called me and we discussed our situation at length. We made an agreement to be mature about it if things didn’t pan out between us. We agreed that we were grown-up enough to handle whatever happened without either of us having to leave our jobs. We never told our co-workers. "We've been together almost a year now, and I couldn’t be happier. We're even talking about tying the knot!"

Speed dating is not for the faint of heart. You may find love – or a date, anyway – but you need to steel yourself to face rejection.

For those who have not experience the pleasure and pain of speed dating, the idea is that a bunch of singles get together and each person has a chance to spend a few minutes with a prospective date.

A bell or some other audible signal is used to let the speed daters know it's time to switch partners. At the end of the night, each participant confidentially indicates who they're interested in. Any two singles that match are given each other's contact details.

There are obvious pros and cons to speed dating. The big plus is that there is no need to establish who is or who isn't available, everyone there is single and looking for a date. Say for example, dating websites , where many of you will know about online singles chat rooms, speed dating is similar, but in physical reality. It's an easy, modern way to meet people.

But there's pressure. Sometimes friends, especially groups of women, go out for some speedy fun, only to find that heartache is at the other end. "It was supposed to be a girls' night out," says Nancy, a 37 year-old woman from the Pacific North Coast. "But it was a disaster. My best friend and I had our sights set on the same guy. In an article on Wikipedia.com, the science and statistics behind speed dating is explained: "A 2005 analysis at the University of Pennsylvania found that dozens of HurryDate speed dating functions ascertained that the majority of people made their decisions within the first three seconds of being introduced. Furthermore, issues that included religion, past marriages, and smoking habits were found to play a much lower role than anticipated.

Further studies in 2006 at Edinburgh, Scotland demonstrated that 45% of the women participants in a speed-dating function and 22% of the men had come to a conclusion inside the first 30 seconds of being introduced. It also established that dialogue regarding travel resulted in extra matches than dialogue about movies.

"Research of speed dating functions commonly show more selectivity amongst women than among men. For example, the Pennsylvania report revealed that the average man was selected by 34% of the women and the average woman was preferred by 49% of the men."

If you go into speed dating with a relaxed attitude and can handle rejection from time to time, it could be for you. But if you're the sensitive type and are easily hurt, stick to the free dating sites and singles chat rooms where you can take things at your own pace.

It's Valentine's Day. It's his birthday. It's her birthday. It's your anniversary. Whatever the occasion, you want to make it special. Here are a few ideas on how to make a special day a romantic one to remember…

Tailor-make your date to suit your partner. Is there something you know he or she has always wanted to do but hasn't? It could be something as simple as going to an expensive restaurant or something as extravagant – and fun – as taking a ride in a hot air balloon.

Take an evening cruise. If you live near the ocean, a lake or river, chances are you can take a romantic dinner cruise to make the celebration a beautiful experience.

Have some fun! Revisit your teenage years and go to a drive-in. Bring plenty of popcorn and be prepared for long kissing sessions!

There's a great moment in the hit movie Twilight that sums up how nerve-racking it can be to meet your new boyfriend's mom and dad. In the film – which a teenage love story between a pretty high school girl called Bella and a sexy vampire called Edward – the girl starts worrying about meeting his parents. Edward laughs at her, commenting that she's more worried about making a good impression on his foster parents, who are also vampires, than the fact that his family may actually want to – quite literally – get their fangs in her. So, assuming your boyfriend's mom and dad aren’t vampires, werewolves or cyborgs, what's the best approach?

Here are some general tips:

* Find out some basic information about his mom and dad, like their interests and hobbies – it could help get the conversation going. Your boyfriend's values may not necessarily be reflected in his mom and dad – so try to find out if they're traditional, conservative folks or aging hippies, or laid-back 'anything goes' type of people. If you have an idea what to expect, it will ease those inevitable nerves.

* First impressions matter so be open and friendly. Smile and shake hands with them.

Seeing red – sex appeal may not be color blind.

We're all looking for that edge to make us more appealing. And one study that's got singles seeing red, so to speak, and is sparking interest, with women who wear red sending a sexy unspoken signal.

Andrew Elliot, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester in New York has found that men think a woman in red or crimson clothes are sexier than if they're wearing another color. "We only determined the result for attraction, males don't value females in red as smarter, more likable, or as having a more respectable personality; they only rate her as sexier and more visually appealing," he says.

Five studies were undertaken with around 125 heterosexual men (men with color blindness were excluded for obvious reasons). The men were shown photos of women "framed in red, white, gray, green, or blue, or with the woman in a red or blue shirt," wrote Theresa Tamkins on cnn. Based on a seven-point scale, with seven being the sexiest and one the least sexy, Andrew Elliott discovered that the color red added 1.25 to the overall sexiness rating.

"We believe that red, due to the connection with hearts and Valentine's Day and intimate apparel and things like that, assumes a sexy meaning," says the research worker. "There's also a theory – a rather intriguing possibleness – that there's a profoundly embedded sort of propensity for heterosexual men to see red as an attraction prompt because that's what occurs in the wild"

"Within our real world, we have a wallow of information that presents about smell, sight, words - who knows what determines the most variation in liking and behavior?" suggests Elliot. "My firm way of thinking is that if you introduce this to the real world and have women who are attracted in their date and wear a red outfit of some sort, they are transmitting the message to the male that he isn't even aware of - they are sending a message that yep, I'm keen and unattached."

The study also revealed that men are more likely to want to have sex with the woman in red than the woman in brown, and right now, research is being undertaken to see if the red effect works on women as well. And the researchers reportedly think it will. Red really does seem to be the color.

There is good news for those who prefer to hunt online, via dating websites , with women posing in red winning the majority of the male attention according to Hookmeup Online in Australia.

Another study – in Hamburg, Germany – showed that redheaded women get more sex than their blond and brunette counterparts! Says Dr Werner Habermehl in Britain's The Daily Mail: "The sex lives of women with red hair were clearly more active than those with other hair color, with more partners and having sex more often than the average. The research shows that the fiery redhead certainly lives up to her reputation." And if you're not a natural redhead, it seems that a bottle of red hair color can have the same affect…

We've all been there. You like that cute girl or cute guy in your office. And when they're in your face almost all day, that girl or guy can be very hard to get out of your mind (and heart).

Listen... Yes, one of the sexiest things a man can be is a good listener. When you meet your date for the first time, don’t spend the entire date talking about yourself. To go Dutch means, quite simply, to split the bill. But is it good etiquette on the first date? Some women, especially women who identify as feminists, don’t like a man to pay for them – they're independent and they want to be treated as such. But men – some of them anyway – can feel emasculated when a woman tries to pay for the date. It's a tricky situation but it can be handled with aplomb. So for string women and insecure men, going Dutch may be the way to go….But is it?

Also called the "Dutch date" or "Dutch treat", the precise origin of the term remains lost in the mists of time but does indeed appear to come from the beautiful flat land of windmills. And versions of the term exist in other languages…Some Latin American countries call it "pagar a la Americana", which translates to "to pay American style", while in Italy it's called "pagare alla romana", or "to pay like they do in Rome".

Whatever language you say it in, it's important to play the dating etiquette game to win. Jenna, a 21-year-old student from Sacramento, says that she likes a guy to offer to pick up the check. "My Mom raised me as a feminist and I know my parents first date was a Dutch treat, but I kind of think it’s sweet when a guy offers to pay. But if he pays on the first date, I make sure I pay for the second – plus it gives me a chance to bring up the subject of seeing him again. 'My treat next time,' is one of my lines – but keep that to yourself!"

The question of going Dutch can be a minefield for men. Tradition and old fashioned chivalry say that the male should pick up the check. Watch out for the 'rebound effect' and be true to yourself. Does the age difference matter?

When it comes to dating younger (or older) people, how much age difference is exceptable?

They met on the job. He was 45 and had more charisma than most. She was 19, beautiful and mature beyond her years. There's an age difference here of some 26 years. We can hear you hollering from all corners of cyberspace…"Oh! That's just too much!" But would it make a difference if we told you the "job" they met at was in fact a film set and the people we're talking about are none other than Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall? Yep, one of the greatest of all Hollywood couples were born more than two decades apart and who can doubt their love?

To take a more modern example, let's look at Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. He's 16 years younger than her, they said it would never last, and here there are, some six years later.

Dan L. Wilson, an expert relationships guru writes, that older singles "will unquestionably be more incisive, perhaps less difficult and surely more representational. An older and wiser woman plausibly won't anticipate her new male acquaintance to be a perfect angel and so will be more likely to put up with his (almost certain) flaws. Hopefully, an older man will be to a lesser extent likely to look for glamour although he'd probably still value good looks and a well tended to appearance. He will want respectable conversation, a sense of playfulness and witticism, and a personality that prevails over physical attraction as time goes by".

The trend for 40-plus American singles – especially over the past three years – is to go online to search for love. As Margot, a 44-year-old publicity agent explains: "I work in a busy, people-focused field and meet a lot of men my age through my work – a lot of interesting men, but the ones I'm interested in are always taken. It was getting pretty lonely out there, and it had been almost a year since I had a proper date so I took the plunge and joined a dating website.

"My expectations were low when I went out to meet Conrad. He's two years older than me, and we've both been through the whole divorce hell. I just didn’t want to get my hopes up, but six weeks later, I have to say I'm feeling pretty positive about where this is heading."

Carlo, a 52-year-old restaurant manager, is also a fan of free dating websites and chat rooms. "I work six days a week in a physically demanding job. I'm on my feet all the time and when I get to my sole day off, I just want to sit around and do nothing and hang out with my dog. I only started looking at dating websites about six months ago, at the suggestion of a customer I had become friendly with – a very beautiful woman, but a beautiful MARRIED one! She said she'd met her husband online, and that internet dating was great, especially for people my age who have a hard time meeting other singles. "I took her advice, and now I have a beautiful woman of my own."

Sex on the first date – to be or not to be.

Sex on the first date is a contentious issue. Some make it a "rule" (pun intended) to never do it. Others do indeed partake, and never regret it. And yet other singles do it…and wish they hadn't.

A book called Rough Guide To The Brain by Dr Barry J Gibb (not one of those singing siblings, we've been assured) claims that sex on the first date – or at least early in the relationship – is a great idea as it releases hormones that help us trust and bond with our new partner. But this is being disputed in some circles, and the scientific jury is still out.

Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider would disagree. The authors of the best-selling The Rules: Time-Tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right have different ideas. They famously advise women to wait to let the passion escalate. And they may have a point…If you wait, there's more of a build up. More sexual tension. More desire. More excitement. This is not a hard and fast rule, but if you hang back, chances are when it does happen, the fireworks display will be bigger and brighter than it would have been when you didn’t know each other so well. Think of waiting as a little like extended foreplay...

As the authors told The Sun newspaper: “Men like a challenge and to be the pursuer, while women generally like security. If you chase a man or if you’re too available, he eventually gets bored, loses interest and dumps you. We’re giving old-fashioned ideas to very modern women. The rules for conventional dating, or if you use dating websites are eternal. The Rules are about boundaries, self esteem and protecting yourself from unnecessary pain – they stop you from ruining a relationship that could have been..." “The only way to make a guy take things to the next level is to keep some things sacred."

Millions of American women swear by The Rules. Others dismiss it as just too old-fashioned. Agony aunt and sex educator Dr Petra Boynton makes a lot of sense when she says: "There are some schools of thought that the longer you delay sex the better you get to know someone. This is important for young people who may be less confident about sex. It is also good if you’re new to dating or back on the dating scene after a long term relationship. However, it shouldn’t be an absolute rule since we need to allow people to make their own decisions – and mistakes."

The bottom line is, as Dr Boynton wisely says, it's up to you. If you're old enough to go into singles chat rooms and check out dating sites, then you're old enough to make your own decisions about sex. To do it or not to do it…it's up to you!

Is there anything more intimate than sex? There sure is – kissing. And is there anything that can predict whether sex with a new partner will hit all the right notes? That's right, you guessed it – kissing.

Everyone loves to pucker up – especially singles when they exchange their first all-important kiss – but kissing is particularly fascinating to scientists. They’ve even given the study of that lip-locking subject a name, "philematology", but we think "kissology" is sexier, so that's what we'll call it.

Depending on where the kissologist is coming from – which branch of science was their primary base – theories differ on why we kiss. And not all cultures do kiss, with something like 10 percent of the world living in a lip-lock free zone, as observed by Helen Fisher, an anthropologist a decade ago.

One thing kissologists seem to agree on is that when we kiss, that's when the chemistry happens – or doesn’t happen as the case (or perhaps kiss) may be. There's no such thing as a good kisser or a bad one, it's just how well we connect chemically with the person on the other end of our lips. Respected publication Scientific American tells us that's there's a whole bunch of chemical reactions taking place when we kiss, and this chemistry tells us how genetically compatible we are. Other kissologists say the enjoyment level of the kiss is an indicator on how compatible you and your potential partner will be when the lights are turned low.

Good kissers don't grow on trees according to a recent Australian women's magazine survey, with 71% of women indicating their first kisses where usually out of sink and felt un-coordinated. Over 40% of single women in America are using free dating websites to build chemistry with potential match's before going in for the big pash with a virtual stranger after being plied with white wine at the local bar.

But as we venture out of the singles online chat rooms into lip-land, we find that smooching means something different to American women as it does to American men. More than 1000 students taking part in a State University of New York study revealed that kissing was far more important to women than to men. For men, kissing was used "to increase the likelihood of sex," said a report in Evolutionary Psychology. But for women, it was a way of sizing up a partner, and then to "check" how the relationship is going later down the line.

Dr Glenn Wilson from London's Institute of Psychiatry specializes in relationships, gets down to the nitty gritty – the facts of life answer to the question of kissing: "Kissing is used by everyone as a bonding and testing mechanism.

"But the fact is women are more discriminatory than men. Men can just go out and spread their seed, but women have to take more responsibility because of the consequences and so they are likely to want to test more."

The State University's Dr Gordon Gallop puts it another way: 'We see kissing as an evolved courtship ritual. At the moment of a kiss there's a complicated exchange of information…"

There is, obviously, some serious biological stuff going on behind the kiss – the most intimate act between two people.

First date blues – tips for turning it around.

Taking steps towards meeting new friends and singles online. I never thought I would go down this road, but once I had a look at some of the dating profiles, I was seriously shocked by the amazing talent and shear numbers of available single people on offer!

After we've got to know our new single romance interest in the chat room, the time comes to meet. In the online dating world, things usually develop pretty nicely via emails and we can feel as though we know the person before we've come face to face with them.

But that's not always the case. Often, during an online chat , we can be whoever we want to be – we can be a whole lot more confident behind a keyboard than we can in that place some call the real world.

So, you're a bit shy. The single person you've just met is a little shy. You're meeting for a coffee in your favorite café, but you've run out of conversation really quickly… What do you do?

1. Swap coffee for a beer Finish that coffee quickly and suggest going out for a drink or for a stroll. Conversation can be easier with the ultimate of social lubricants – alcohol – but subtly make sure your date is someone who enjoys a drink. If your date is a teetotaler then…

2. Go for a stroll Take it out of the chat room (or rather, out of the café) and hit the streets. There's always somewhere you can take your date. Before meeting up, have a quick scan of the city guides and see if there are any art exhibitions or shows that look interesting, and keep them in your mind as a back-up. If you're not a city-dweller, you've got the option of a nature walk. Wherever you are, walking will get the blood moving, the brain buzzing and the conversation flowing.

3. Break the ice with honesty What have you got to lose? Just come right out and say how nervous you feel. Take a leaf out of Jonathan's book…Jonathan is a 24-year-old college graduate in between jobs. He ventured into the singles chat rooms because he was the shy type. He also had friends that had successful online dating stories, and thought he had nothing to lose.

"I met this great woman online," says Jonathan. We chatted every night for almost two weeks – we talked about everything. We both loved the same books and movies – crime thrillers – and we had similar experiences working our way through college.

Finally the day came to meet. I chose this great funky little African-style café that was atmospheric. But once I got there with my date, we were stuck for words. It was crazy, we were getting on so well in the singles chat rooms.

"So, I thought, 'What have I got to lose?'. It was so awkward so I just leant across the table and said, 'I think we're both a bit nervous…I know I am! This is the first time I've tried online dating.'"

Confidence is a turn-on. We all know people who aren't in line for the Miss or Mr America crowns, but their self-belief is so great that draw the opposite sex to them.

But if you're chronically under-confident, and your about to meet your new date, how can give yourself a boost? Of course, there's the usual stuff about looking as good as you can, but confidence doesn’t come from what you're wearing – or even how you look – it comes from inside.

A lot of it comes down to what the psychologists call "self-talk". So take a moment and look at your thoughts as they roll through your head. Are you putting yourself down? Are you thinking 'She'll never like me, I'm just not cute enough?' Are you going over and over past break-ups in your head?

If the answer to any of the above is yes, then your self-talk needs major surgery. Be your own best friend. Mentally go through all the times in your life when you've felt confident when you've passed an exam with flying colors, for example, or got that hard-to-get job. Or when you've helped someone or been a true friend. Ask yourself what your strengths and talents are (come on! we ALL have them!), and take these thoughts and polish them.

Confidence can come from taking a chance. Some people have been known to go sky-diving or fire-walking to boost their confidence. You don’t have to go that far, but the idea is to do something outside of your comfort zone. It'll raise your confidence quota, without a doubt. You may be surprised to find out that confidence is a learned skill…

Quoted in Psychology Today, Bernardo Carducci, the director of Indiana University Southeast's Shyness Research Institute, says that "we assume that confident people were born that way. That puts us at a disadvantage because then we say, 'I could never do that.' "We compare ourselves to the most popular person in the room – or on TV – rather than to people who are similar to us. When we see a celebrity like George Clooney on talk shows – suave and funny, flirting easily with the audience – we feel inadequate. But we forget that he's done this hundreds of times and has an army of handlers to groom and prep him. When we watch The Tonight Show and conclude that icons of charisma are born, not made, we are not only wrong – we sabotage our chances of achieving our social potential."

So, in other words, it's about being realistic. And not comparing ourselves to others. About not berating ourselves when things go wrong. We need to treat – and talk to –ourselves as we would our closest friends.

Singles alike are faced with common situations of anxiety when approaching other singles for a chat or to ask someone on a date. Bernardo Carducci also goes on to suggest that shyness is a common issue for singles, and suggests utilizing free dating websites and singles online chat sites as a less confrontational method of dating.

Confidence…it all comes from the inside.
