The Internet is an open space of infinity - there are no limits. The online world is also virtually unregulated leaving the door open for anyone to invent and execute unimaginable crimes. Internet dating has been a prime target for some of the most heinous and shocking acts committed.
Megan Meier was not enticed away from the safety of her home by an Internet vulture and killed. The person on the picture who she believed wanted to be her friend was indeed not that person, as it turned out, there was no person at all. A feud between Megan and her friend caused the friends parents to take revenge on Megan, who incidentally, is a 14-year-old girl who suffered from weight problems and depression.
The parents of Megan’s friend contact Megan through her My Space page posing as a very good-looking 16-year-old boy by the name of Josh who befriended her. From here, a terrible journey began. Josh made her feel beautiful, cherished and had fully gained her trust. As things seemingly progressed for Megan and Josh, Megan's world imploded. With one single message, these dreadful parents brought Megan's world crashing down "I'm not going to be your friend anymore as I've heard you are mean to your friends"
Megan was the victim of an elaborate Internet ambush, and act of revenge by her friend’s parents. Later that day, Megan's Mother found her hanging from a belt in her bedroom. Megan later died.
And another awful Internet tragedy. In memory of the late Raymond Merrill - Murdered by his online sweetheart. The thought and promise of finding true love has a history of bad endings with the Internet. Raymond was warned by his friends and associates that the situation with his online dating lover looked a little suspicious.
Still, Raymond proceeded to shower his love with $30,000 worth of gifts before flying to Brazil accompanied by a $5000 diamond ring. The day Raymond left his hometown for the airport was the last time he was ever seen alive. The murderers of Raymond Merrill were later arrested, and his scorched remains were also recovered. This is a real life horror story that should teach any of us a lesson. Raymond was killed by his online lovers boyfriend in an elaborate set up via one of the dating websites.
